Estonia

Nuclear regulatory authority

Nuclear safety regulation in Estonia is the responsibility of the Environmental Board.

Nuclear activities

There are no nuclear power plants, research facilities or facilities for radioactive material production, except two PWR-type reactors with submarine reactor compartments in safe storage. There are facilities using radioactive sources in medical, research and industrial applications. Transportation of radioactive material is also carried out.

Radioactive waste and spent fuel management

Radioactive waste facilities include one interim storage facility for low- and intermediate-level waste (LILW), one LILW repository under decommissioning and remediated uranium mining and milling tailing pond. There is no spent fuel or policy for the spent fuel management.

Main legal instruments

The Radiation Act which entered into force on 1 May 2004.
