Luxembourg

Nuclear regulatory authority

Nuclear safety regulation in Luxembourg is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health, Department of Radiation Protection (DRP).

Nuclear activities

Luxembourg has no nuclear power plants and no other nuclear installations. Because of the operation of a nuclear power plant at 8.5 km from its border, a strong focus is put on emergency preparedness and response.

Radioactive waste and spent fuel management

In Luxembourg radioactive wastes are mainly arising from the use of radioactive sources in industry, medicine and to a small extent from the use in education and research. All disused sealed sources have to be returned to the country of origin and if this turns out to be impossible, to a foreign waste management facility, based on a bilateral agreement. There is a single collection point (LCDR - Local de collecte de déchets radioactifs) for radioactive waste, arising mostly through appearance of orphan sources, where the radioactive materials are collected and packed for shipment.

Main legal instruments

Law of 28 May 2019 on radiation protection
Grand-ducal regulation of
1st August 2019 on radiation protection
