The IAEA is the world´s center of cooperation in the nuclear field within the United Nations family. The IAEA works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies. The IAEA helps countries to ensure nuclear safety and to prepare for and respond to emergencies. This is done through advisory international standards, codes, and guides; binding international conventions; international peer reviews to evaluate national operations, capabilities, and infrastructures; and an international system of emergency preparedness and response.
The IAEA is advised by safety standards committees, and a Commission on Safety Standards which oversees the IAEA safety standards programme
The IAEA provides training services, seminars and international conferences for the exchange of nuclear safety information and the Incident Reporting System the IAEA operates with the NEA is the focal point for incident reporting and exchanging experience to improve the safety of nuclear power plants. The IAEA is also the secretariat for the International Conventions.
The IAEA provides audit and review services to member states on nuclear safety and security. These review services include:
- The International Regulatory Review Service (IRRS). IRRS reviews give expert advice to National Regulatory Authorities on compliance with the IAEA requirements documents and other internationally accepted best practices.
The IAEA’s Operational safety and Review Teams (OSART). These teams assist member states to enhance the operational safety of nuclear power plants.
